Congratulations to Taneisha Providence who on Friday, November 15, 2024, successfully defended her dissertation proposal. The title of Taneisha’s dissertation is AN EXPLORATORY STUDY OF SUCCESSFUL AFRICAN CARIBBEAN STUDENTS’ EXPERIENCES IN STEM OPPORTUNITY PROGRAMS IN NEW YORK STATE.
Across the United States, persistence studies in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) majors at higher educational institutions indicate that underrepresented minorities have lower persistence rates in these fields. As a result, the majority of STEM workers in the U.S. are white (69%), followed by Asians (13%), Blacks (9%), and Hispanics (7%) (Funk & Parker, 2018). In this interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA), I seek to understand the experiences of successful, persisting in STEM major to senior year or graduation, first and second generation African Caribbean students in STEM majors at four-year institutions in NYS, with a specific focus on those enrolled in opportunity programs. Drawing upon Ogbu's Cultural-Ecological Theory (CET), this study will explore how societal forces—such as Societal Educational Policies & Practices and Treatments of Minorities in School—and community forces—such as cultural values and expectations and Interpretation of Schooling —impact students' self-beliefs, values, and academic persistence and success (Ogbu, 1998). This study will also aim to understand the unique perspectives of African Caribbean students who have grown up in a cultural context where race may not be as central an issue as it is in the United States, providing a nuanced view of their educational experiences and the factors contributing to their success.
