Congratulations to Sharon Spencer who on Friday, November 15, 2024, successfully defended her dissertation proposal. The title of Sharon’s dissertation is: A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF TEACHER GENDER ON SCIENCE PERFORMANCE BY FEMALE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS.
Female students have historically been underrepresented in higher science classes in college and postgraduate science careers. Teachers not only influence what and how subject matter is taught, they also influence whether students, more specifically female students, will pursue higher education and careers in science (Hand, Rice, and Greenlee, 2017; Canning, Muenks, Green, and Murphy, 2019). The purpose of this quantitative ex post facto study is to examine if a difference exists in science academic performance with teacher gender for female high school students in New York State (Hart, 2016; Watson-Thomas, 2018; Young, Foster and Druery, 2018). Currently, positions of seniority in the science field are dominated by males (Holman, Stuart-Fox and Houser, 2018). The statistical difference between teacher gender and science achievement among female high school students may provide insight into improving education to encourage females to pursue higher science courses and increase the female presence in science careers and pedagogy.
