Congratulations to Mariya Pushkantser who on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, successfully defended her dissertation proposal. The title of Mariya’s dissertation is GENDERED ORGANIZATIONS: A QUALITATIVE STUDY OF WOMEN PRINCIPALS’ EXPERIENCES NAVIGATING GENDER ROLES AND BIAS IN SECONDARY PUBLIC SCHOOLS.
Gender disparities persist in secondary principalship which remains dominated by (white) men. While women may have the same chance of promotion as men, they often have to work more years than men to get these promotions. Further, the secondary principalship is one of the few pipelines for educational leadership to advance into district level positions. This reality gives rise to the need for research into the experiences of women who hold secondary school principalships. This qualitative inquiry is guided by Acker’s theory of the gendered organization (1990), which posits that gendered structures, such as gendered division of labor, constrain organizational practices and maintain gender disparities. Drawing upon this theoretical lens, this study further seeks to uncover the ways in which the role of secondary principal is gendered. Interviews will be conducted with women, who are secondary public school principals in New York and also mothers who have children under 18 at home.
