Congratulations to James V. Downey who on Friday, November 22, 2024, successfully defended his final dissertation. The title of Jim’s dissertation is LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT WITHIN EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS.

This study provided significant evidence that by combining group leadership activities with preexisting experiential learning occasions enhanced student learning outcomes. Student comments indicated that the leadership orientation and Monomoy rowing activities influence how they will approach their own leadership development in the future. The use of cohort directed instruction and activities does enhance learning objectives and topic conceptualization. The study found the existing curriculum development did not need drastic changes to improve student learning outcomes. Instead, small adjustments to time management and student assessments were suggested.
