Congratulations to Jude Fleurismond who on Friday, October 18, 2024, successfully defended his dissertation proposal. The title of Jude’s dissertation is: "LOW TRANSFER RATES OF ADULT LEARNERS FROM COMMUNITY COLLEGES TO FOUR-YEAR COLLEGES OR UNIVERSITIES".
The purpose of Jude’s qualitative study is to explore the reasons for the low transfer rate of adult learners from community colleges to four-year colleges or universities. The study is guided by Malcom Knowles’s Theory of Adult Learning, specifically Knowles’s idea of the self-concept, which acknowledges that adult learners’ decisions reflect autonomy and self-direction. The information gained from this study will help to understand adult learners’ experiences in community colleges and how adult learners make decisions to join four-year programs. This gap of knowledge in adult education is invaluable for improving educational programs to match the learning needs of adult learners. In addition, the knowledge can help to guide resource allocation to encourage educational advancement and high enrollment of adult learners in undergraduate programs.
