Congratulations to Cori Ann Boss Jackson who on Thursday, July 18, 2024,clearly and successfully defended her dissertation proposal. The title of Cori’s dissertation is:AN INTERPRETIVE QUALITATIVE STUDY: THE ROLE OF TEACHER AUTONOMY AND PERCEIVED COMPETENCE IN THE IMPLEMENTATION OF PRE-PACKAGED LITERACY CURRICULA.
According to the most recent Nation’s Report Card (n.d.), reading scores for fourth and eighth-grade students are not significantly different from those reported in 1992, indicating stagnant reading achievement for our nation’s children. Attempts to improve reading achievement at the national and state levels have been introduced over the years through legislation. To meet the requirements of this legislation, schools, particularly those in high-needs districts, often purchase pre-packaged literacy curricula.
The purpose of Cori’s interpretive qualitative study is to understand how teachers experience the implementation of a pre-packaged literacy program in high-needs school districts to meet the needs of their diverse student populations. She aims to give voice to teachers who are best positioned to explain if and how these programs meet the needs of diverse learners. Utilizing Self-Determination Theory, Cori will explore how teachers’ autonomy and perceived competence affect their motivation to implement the pre-packaged curriculum in ways that meet the diverse needs of their students.
