Congratulations to Ivan Rudolph-Shabinsky who on Friday, December 13, 2024, successfully defended his dissertation. The title of Ivan’s dissertation is: COLLEGE CHOICE AMONG YOUTH ROWERS FROM ROWING PROGRAMS FOCUSED ON LOW-SES COMMUNITIES.
This study sought to understand and possibly explain the important factors driving low SES youth rowers’ college choice. The data collected offered a rich description of the college choice for a small group of such individuals. This study focused primarily on the rowers and secondarily on the programs they rowed with in high school as the preparation they receive in these programs is likely a factor in their college choice process. The themes found led to a new theory, called Qualitative Optimization of College Choice (QOCC), that helps explain how these individuals searched for and selected the colleges they chose to attend. This research will help youth and collegiate rowing programs improve the college choice process for students from low SES backgrounds and might possibly lead to further research to see if QOCC has broader application or perhaps to finding ways to move college choice beyond a prestige maximization process.
