Congratulations to Erik Van Gunten who on Monday, August 26, 2024, successfully defended his dissertation proposal. The title of Erik’s dissertation is: HOW PIVOTING DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC IMPACTED THE ROLES AND LEADERSHIP STYLES OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PRINCIPALS IN URBAN PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

The purpose of this qualitative study is to describe how elementary school principals in urban public schools altered their practices during the periods of school closures and remote learning following the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak and how this experience may have changed their roles and leadership styles long-term. The particular leadership styles to be considered include transformational and distributed. This study will draw upon Lewin’s change model theory as the researcher seeks to describe how principals responded to the challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic and how it changed them as leaders.
