Congratulations to Juliesa McFarlane who on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, successfully defended her dissertation. The title of Juliesa’s dissertation is: BLACK SINGLE HEADS OF HOUSEHOLDS LEVELS OF EDUCATION AND ITS EFFECT ON THEIR CHILDREN’S PURSUIT OF HIGHER LEARNING.
This study examines the essence of experience in black single-led households in relation to education. Understanding the experience of Black single parent led households will provide guidance to educators on how to provide access to higher education. Social and Human Capital allows people to attain advancement of socio-economic status, and education is an avenue to possess such capital. Black households experience the world differently as Black Americans are faced with intuitional, and systematic, racism (Douglas & Peck 2013; Lee, Jacobs & Mann C 2022). Black single parents are burdened with fighting racism, while raising Black children in need of additional support because of low socio-economic communities.
Transcendental phenomenology of science is designed for acquiring and collecting data that explicates the essences of human experience (Husserl, 2002). Transcendental phenomenology approach was used to conduct interviews for this dyad study of single parents and their first born or only child. The transcendental approach will allow the researcher to explore the essence of experiences relating to resilience, education, and social capital. Purposive sampling will ensure those that participate in this study can describe their educational experiences as a single parent or as a child of a single parent.
