As an art historian, you’ll study art and architecture in their historical contexts - not only as aesthetic statements, but also as documents of culture. Art history is an interdisciplinary field that examines the cultural, religious, political, literary, technological, and economic circumstances within which works of art are produced. With New York City just a half-hour away, you’ll have the opportunity to see many of the works you study in person – and get the chance to conduct research and hold internships at world-class museums, historical societies, galleries, libraries, and auction houses in New York City, Westchester County, and Connecticut.
In addition to learning about artistic expression and production in a variety of time periods and genres, our program offers both majors and minors the opportunity to broaden horizons through in-depth study of world cultures, develop sophisticated writing and research skills through writing-intensive seminars, become confident and articulate public speakers, and work closely with experts in their respective fields.
The Visual Studies and Art History program organizes an annual lecture sponsored by the department’s Arthur M. Berger Fund; this event features an eminent scholar in art history or an art-related field who not only presents a public lecture, but also interacts with students informally before and after the event. Students also have the option to travel with faculty members from the department for academic credit to such destinations as Ireland, Florence, Venice, and Rome, and can also take advantage of two annual field trips, also sponsored by the Berger Fund, to New York museums and to special exhibitions and museum collections in cities such as Boston, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.
Read our annual newsletter here, and learn more about the program and the different offerings it has throughout the year.
