Program Overview
Manhattanville University’s master’s in special education degree programs embody the underlying philosophy of believing that all children, regardless of learning and behavioral differences, are entitled to a free and appropriate education and should be provided with meaningful instruction in the least restrictive environment.
Our newly approved 33-credit MAT in Special Education leads to NYSED Initial/Professional Certification in Students with Disabilities PK-12, positioning graduates to fill vacancies across the full grade span. No prior teaching certification is required.
Our Master of Professional Studies (MPS) programs aim to equip educators for Special Education teacher certification in New York, preparing them for the demands of 21st-century classrooms. For those with a master’s degree, certificate-only options in special education are available.
Manhattanville’s graduate special education certification programs offer diverse areas of focus, including dual certification pathways, all approved by the New York State Education Department (NYSED). Program Information
Students in the MAT and MPS in special education degree and certification programs prepare to be teacher candidates who demonstrate:
· Knowledge of the current trends and issues in the field of special education and understand the learning needs of students with disabilities
· Skill in employing instructional strategies that are effective in teaching students with exceptional needs using assistive technology
· Knowledge of I.E.P. and I.F.S.P. development
· An ability to select, administer, score, and interpret formal and informal assessment tools
· Sensitivity to multicultural issues in the classroom and school community
· The ability to collaborate with general education teachers, families, and educational service providers
· The ability to work effectively with students with exceptional needs, their families, educational service providers, and the community in developing viable transition plans
Masters of Arts in Teaching Program
Manhattanville’s MAT degree program in Special Education is designed meticulously with a focus on producing not just certified teachers, but educators who are compassionate, innovative, and ready to make a difference. Students who not yet certified in any area and wish to only pursue Special Education certification may pursue the MAT in Special Education.

Master of Professional Studies Programs
MPS in Special Education curriculum, grounded in theory and practice, guarantees that graduates hold a holistic understanding of special education. The programs are designed for students who are already certified by New York State in another certification area, or for those who would like to pursue Dual certification in Special Education and another certification area. The program requirements of our MPS in Special Education degrees range from 33 credits to 51 credits depending on certification area.
MPS Programs Leading to Special Education Certification
Students who would like to pursue Special Education certification and are already certified by New York State in Early Childhood, Childhood, and/or Adolescent areas may pursue on MPS in Special Education. These programs provide a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical experiences to ensure every child is given an opportunity to thrive and that teaching strategies are fueled by service to students.
