Pursue Accelerated Certification With New York Teaching Internship Certificate

Manhattanville College’s Jump Start master’s program is an accelerated teaching degree that leads to a master’s in education and Initial Teacher Certification in New York in under two years.

With flexible evening courses, several certification options, and start dates in both fall and spring, the accelerated Jump Start pathway is ideal for career changers and working professionals as an alternative route to teaching in New York. Many of our students optimize their employment opportunities by earning an additional certification in special education.

Begin teaching in your own classroom in less than one year; then, while teaching full time, complete your master’s degree and earn New York State Initial Certification to continue making an impact.

Manhattanville’s Jump Start program is a guided pathway to becoming a teacher in New York while still completing the entrance requirements for Initial Teacher Certification.

For professionals excited to enter the teaching profession, it means working in a real classroom within 7-12 months, not waiting the more than two years it may take to complete an entire graduate program, including student teaching, before looking for their first teaching position.

Here’s why Manhattanville is the ideal way to pursue the Internship Certificate alternative pathway to teacher certification in New York:

  • Strong and experienced faculty help make learning experiential, collaborative, and interactive
  • Students will join a cohort and attend workshops that build cohesiveness throughout their program and provide support during their early years of teaching
  • Evening classes, from 4:20 PM to 9:30 PM, make it easier for you to be able to continue working
  • Some students can complete their master's degree in less than two years
  • During your first year of teaching, Jump Start provides a Manhattanville mentor who will visit once a week to help develop unit and lesson plans and design classroom management protocols
  • Tuition discounts are available for students seeking to be certified in in-demand areas and for returning Peace Corps volunteers
Immediate Teaching Career Outcomes Within 7-21 Months

Manhattanville’s School of Education will assist in locating opportunities to apply for positions as you begin taking certification coursework early in the program.

Unlike having to wait to complete a graduate degree in education in order to teach in New York, the Jump Start program option enables students to start their teaching career and pursue long-term opportunities with full-time employment at New York area schools.

Convenient Evening Courses

The first stage of the program after enrollment is completing a specific series of graduate courses that prepare students to apply for an Internship Certificate with NYSED. Throughout the program, courses are conveniently held in the evenings, optimal for working professionals and new teachers finishing their education.

Begin Teaching Internship after 50 Credits

The Internship Certificate allows students to teach full-time in paid teaching positions while completing the master’s degree and certification requirements necessary for Initial Teacher Certification.

Students often find their place of employment in New York City, typically the Bronx. Whether you are pursuing teacher certification in early childhood, secondary education, or special education, your internship selection will strengthen your skills in an area you are pursuing.

Complete the Rest of Your Master’s Degree While Teaching

Approximately the latter 50 percent of your master’s degree will be completed as you work in your full- or part-time employment setting.

Students with a previous master’s degree may have fewer credits to complete in the post-master’s certification pathway.

Regular or Intensive Options

Tailor your accelerated teaching certification program to your preferred time commitment by selecting a schedule that suits you: Regular pace or an intensive pace.

The intensive schedule requires full-time employment in the latter half of the program, while the regular schedule requires part-time employment in the latter half of the program.

Whether they are career changers transitioning to teaching or teachers in a new area, students in the Jump Start program may pursue New York State initial certification and their master’s in teaching degrees in the following areas:

Special Education is available as a dual certification for most Early Childhood, Childhood, and Secondary Education Initial Teacher Certifications. Post-master’s certifications are available to candidates who already have a master's degree in their field and seek initial certification.

What is the admissions timeline for the Jump Start accelerated teaching program?

The Jump Start program has two rolling start dates per year, in early February for the intensive schedule and late August for the regular class schedule.

To begin the program at your desired start date, please submit your application 6 weeks in advance at the latest. You will be asked to schedule an interview and will receive your admissions decision prior to the start date of the program.

When are classes held?

All classes in the Jump Start program meet in the evenings, with classes held between 4:20 PM to 9:30 PM.

Do I need previous education coursework to pursue accelerated teacher certification with Jump Start?

You do not need prior experience or education coursework to enter the Jump Start accelerated teacher education master’s program.

What is the difference between the Jump Start pathway and the traditional master’s in teaching program?

Jump Start program students can start teaching in their own classroom within 7-12 months with an Internship Certificate. They can then continue their master's degree while teaching full-time. This allows working professionals to switch to teaching more quickly and start their teaching career while fulfilling all requirements.

In a traditional master's program, students only gain full-time teaching licenses after completing the program, including a student teaching experience as a graduate student. The Jump Start has no student teaching requirement.

There are several discounted tuition opportunities available to students in the Jump Start program pathway.

  • 30% tuition discount for students interested in obtaining certification in science, math, and foreign languages
  • 25% tuition reduction for returned Peace Corps volunteers
