Forensic scientists use it to test evidence. Art conservators use it to help preserve centuries-old masterworks. Pharmaceutical scientists use it to develop next-generation drugs. Chemistry, so fundamental to our world, is critical to each of these fields – and many more. Chemistry is often referred to as the central science: It joins together physics and mathematics, biology and medicine, and earth and environmental sciences. It plays a role in everyone's lives and touches almost every aspect of our existence in some way. And while it is obviously important to have a chemistry background if you plan to teach chemistry or to work in the chemical industry, it is also a vital part of several other careers, including environmental science, biotechnology, medicine, patent law, and more.
A chemistry degree from Manhattanville can be tailored to a student’s particular interests. The Chemistry Department offers a strong, diversified program that prepares students for graduate work in chemistry, biochemistry, medicine, or the allied health fields. The skills required to succeed in chemistry – logic, curiosity, problem-solving skills, and a keen eye for detail – also give you a distinct advantage in many professional programs.
Manhattanville’s chemistry program, like all our majors, is built on a foundation of liberal arts. So while you’ll spend time in the lab, getting critical training for careers in academic and industrial research, you’ll also build skills in communications and critical thought that come from studying arts and the humanities as well – skills that you’ll need to succeed in any job that you pursue.

Students, who graduate with a major in Chemistry, are expected to:
- Critically evaluate and solve problems through the application of appropriate chemistry knowledge
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of basic laboratory methodologies and the skills necessary to carry out experiments, including the ability to use instrumentation
- Communicate the purpose and results of laboratory experiments through oral and written reports
Please note that our BA in Chemistry is recognized in industry and by graduate (MS, PhD) and professional (MD, DDS, DVM, etc.) programs. Also, many employers and professional programs in chemistry-related fields value the breadth of study offered by the BA (as compared to a BS) in Chemistry.
Students, who graduate with a minor in Chemistry, are expected to:
- Identify and solve applied chemical problems
- Demonstrate proficiency with laboratory techniques
- Evaluate and analyze chemical data using the scientific method
