Educational Leadership Certification Program Overview

The Educational Leadership program offers a robust curriculum that enables graduates to address the complex challenges facing P-12 schools. The program combines theory with practice, enabling graduates to address the complex challenges facing P-12 schools. As a candidate, you will participate in authentic leadership experiences aligned with relevant research. You will develop the knowledge base and skills to implement change, promote success for every student, harness the power of technology, and build strong organizational cultures that engage and respect all members of the school community.

The Educational Leadership program offers 4 pathways leading to certification. For teachers with a master’s degree, the most common option is the Professional Diploma leading to a School Building Leader and School District Leader certification.  The next section describes each pathway and the credits and courses required to earn a Professional Diploma or Master’s degree.

  • Master of Professional Studies (MPS) – Educational Leadership – School Building Leader Certification – 36 credits
  • Professional Diploma – Educational Leadership - School Building Leader Certification – 30 credits
  • Professional Diploma – Educational Leadership -  School Building Leader and School District Leader Certification – 36 credits
  • Certificate of Advanced Study – School District Leader – 11 credits* 

Manhattanville also offers the unique Bridge program that enables students to make seamless transfers of credit to or from the School of Education doctoral program. (Note: this should be a live link, too.)

All Educational Leadership programs are approved by New York State and fully accredited by CAEP. They are aligned with state and national standards for school leaders. Students become ethically and socially responsible school administrators who are knowledgeable in all aspects of school leadership. Courses are taught by instructors with deep experience in P-12 programs and extensive involvement in professional activities. The program is geared towards working professionals, equipping them with the tools needed to lead our increasingly diverse 21st century school communities.  

Students in the Educational Leadership program earn credits towards New York State administrative certification. As part of the certification requirements, students are required to complete the School Building Leader and/or School District Leader State Exams. 
 
 
FAQ I: Will I receive my New York State (NYS) certification as a School Building Leader (SBL) and/or School District Leader (SDL) upon completion of the Doctoral program at Manhattanville University?
Answer I: No. Completion of the doctoral program does not lead to NYS certification as a School Building Leader/School District Leader (SBL/SDL).
 
FAQ II: Is it possible to apply any doctoral level course credits towards certification as a NYS SBL/SDL?
Answer II: Yes! You may apply 10 credits from the doctoral program to the Educational Leadership program leading to SBL/SDL certification. The specific courses that align to the program are described .
 
FAQ III: I took some educational leadership classes at Manhattanville. Is it possible to apply any Educational Leadership credits towards the doctoral program?
Answer III: Yes, you may apply up to 12 graduate credits from the Manhattanville graduate or professional diploma program in educational leadership to the doctoral program. Clickfor more information about credit transfers.
 
FAQ IV: I took educational leadership classes at another institution. May I apply those credits to the doctoral program?
Answer IV: Perhaps! Transfer credits depend on the type of course taken and/ or program timeframes. Your coursework will be reviewed by Dr. Wan to determine if courses may be applied to the 59 hour doctoral program.
 
FAQ V: So, how many credits do I need for the Doctoral program and the Educational Leadership program?
Answer V: The Doctoral program requires 59 graduate credits and the Educational Leadership professional development program requires 36 credits. If you take the courses separately, you will need a total of 95 credits hours to complete both programs. However, if you apply graduate courses to the doctoral program and doctoral classes to the educational leadership certificate, you will need a total of 73 credits with specific courses in educational leadership as well as the doctoral program.
 
FAQ VI: In the final analysis, how many hours will I take in the doctoral program if I do a combined program.
Answer VI: With a combined program, you will take a total of 47 credit hours in the Doctoral program.
 
FAQ VII: How many hours will I need for the Educational Leadership program if I take 10 hours in the Doctoral program?
Answer VII: With a combined program, you will need to take a total of 26 credits in the Educational Leadership program.
