About Me

Professor P.L. Gardella (Petra or Peter) joined the Manhattanville faculty in 1983. They earned their B.A. at Harvard College, Master of Theological Studies at Harvard Divinity School and Ph.D. at Yale University. Dr. Gardella loves the study of religions, both as a fascinating subject and for what religions reveal about history, cultures, human beings, and ultimate truth. As a scholar and teacher, they have found that Manhattanville is a special place to teach and to study religion because of its history, its location, and the diversity of its faculty and student body. Their first book, Innocent Ecstasy: How Christianity Gave America an Ethic of Sexual Pleasure was published by Oxford University Press in 1985, with a greatly expanded edition in 2016. Their other books include Domestic Religion (1998), American Angels (2007), and American Civil Religion (2014). Dr. Gardella’s is currently co-authoring a book with Laurence Krute of the Manhattanville School of Education titled Wings of God: How Birds Are Leading Us to a New World (under contract with Oxford).
