Before coming to Manhattanville College, John served as an adjunct faculty member at Bard College, Dutchess Community College, Marist College, Mount Saint Mary College, Sacred Heart University, and Teachers College. He taught courses focused on education in general and social studies specifically. He also served as a student teaching supervisor for students at both Marist College and Teachers College, observing and mentoring students with placements in the Hudson Valley and New York City. He served as the principal for 175 K-8 students at St. Mary’s School, in Wappingers Falls, NY for one year and served as a social studies teacher at Roy C. Ketcham High School in Wappingers Falls, NY and at Paramount Bard Academy in Delano, CA.
John completed his Ph.D. dissertation in Social Studies Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. It is titled "Teaching Religion as a Part of the Social Studies: Superstructures, School Structures and Teacher Subjectivities."
