About Me

Born in Augsburg, Germany, Prof. Wickert is the current director of Manhattanville's International Studies Program. At the College since 1976, she received her undergraduate degree in English literature from the University of Rochester. Both her M.A. in German Literature from SUNY-Albany and her Ph.D. in German Literature from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst involved extensive coursework at German universities. Her dissertation on the German Romantic writer Heinrich von Kleist was published by Peter Lang Verlag.

Following several grants for extended stays in the former German Democratic Republic (GDR) and Czechoslovakia, her subsequent scholarship focused on East European (specifically, GDR) literature and the cultural problems of the “Wende” - the period around the fall of the Wall. Besides teaching all levels of German language as well as a course on German cinema, Prof. Wickert has also been very involved with the International Studies program. She has directed the program over the course of several decades and developed courses for it that focus on various aspects of global culture, including the required INS core course World Cultures in Literature and Film.
