RECRUITING AND ELIGIBILITY POLICIES

By participating in any of our services or events, you agree that your organization is an Equal Opportunity Employer offering employment regardless of gender, age, disability, race, color, religion, marital status, veteran’s status, national or ethnic origin, or sexual orientation. Manhattanville College reserves the right to accept or decline any postings submitted through the Handshake system. In addition, Manhattanville College does not post job opportunities for any organization that requires an initial investment or who require a start-up cost of any amount on the student’s part.  In addition, Manhattanville does not post job opportunities that are 100% commission based.

  1. Policy Statement
    1. Manhattanville College Center for Career Development (CCD) is a member of the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) and adheres to and promotes its Principles for Employment Professionals and Position statement for U.S. Internships.
    2. Employers are expected to maintain a positive, collaborative working relationship with CCD staff. That includes cooperation with CCD policies and procedures, meeting necessary deadlines to ensure smooth operation of on-campus interview visits, providing the job / company information and data requested, providing hire data as requested, complying with the legal obligations of recruiters, and maintaining the confidentiality of student data as outlined in the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Employers that violate FERPA regulations will lose access to CCD services for five years, as stated in the regulations.
    3. All employer representatives are expected to support CCD policies in all interactions with students.

  1. Service Guidelines
    1. The Center for Career Development (CCD) reserves the right to refuse service to organizations or individuals due to any of the following:
      1. requiring personal information at the time of application, such as bank and social security numbers;
      2. misrepresentation, whether defined by dishonest information or absence of information;
      3. fraud;
      4. harassment of Manhattanville College students, alumni, or staff;
      5. breach of confidentiality as required by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA);
      6. failure to adhere to the Center for Career Development employer guidelines;
      7. any violation of Manhattanville College rules and regulations;
      8. any National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Principles for Ethical Professional Practice;
      9. any violation of local, state, or federal laws.
    2. Organizations/companies/employers must:
      1. use an email address that matches the company’s website and are NOT using public domain email addresses.
      2. do not require any type of payment or investment - with the organization itself serving as an umbrella or parent corporation. Investments of this type may include, but are not limited to: requirement to attend unpaid orientation or training sessions; direct payment of a fixed fee; direct payment to be placed into a job or internship, requirement to pay an application fee, payment to attend orientation or training sessions; and/or purchase or rent of a starter kit, sales kit, samples, or presentation supplies.
      3. be willing to provide written documentation of registration with a Better Business Bureau if so requested
      4. have an operational website. CCD will review the employer’s website for appropriateness.
  2. Employers Statement of Responsibility
    1. Refrain from any practice that improperly influences and affects job acceptances (e.g., undue time pressures, encouragement of revocation of another acceptance, etc.).
    2. Employers are required to provide students/alumni with a three-business day notice of a second round interview and must accommodate student requests for alternate second round interview dates if they present a legitimate scheduling conflict (i.e. class, work assignment, previously scheduled interview).
    3. Supply accurate information about your organization and employment opportunities.
    4. Honor all offers of employment to candidates.
    5. Strive to communicate with candidates and the Center for Career Development within the agreed upon time frame.
    6. Serving alcohol should not be part of the recruitment process.
    7. Maintain equal employment opportunity (EEO) compliance and follow affirmative action principles in recruiting activities.
    8. Employment professionals must advise the Center for Career Development of any test conducted on campus. They must advise students of the type and purpose of any test that is required in the recruitment process and to whom the test results will be disclosed.
    9. Exploding offers will not be tolerated and could result in a suspension from Handshake recruiting. Sign-on bonuses should be honored whenever the student accepts the offer.
    10. Students are prohibited from accepting any monetary payments from employers with specific instructions to deposit said monies into their personal banking account to then forward a pre-determined amount to the employer. This is considered unethical and will not be tolerated.
    11. If Employers must cancel their interview session date they need to inform the Recruitment Coordinator immediately. Employers are also required to send an email or letter of explanation to any scheduled student that details your future recruiting plans. A copy of this communication should be provided to the Center for Career Development.

All employment professionals participating in our recruiting program are required to work within a framework of professionally accepted recruiting, interviewing and selection techniques as stipulated in the NACE Principles for Professional Practice.

Disclaimer Statement

The Manhattanville College Center for Career Development works diligently to prevent fraudulent companies from posting jobs or internships for Manhattanville students. We have criteria we consider before a job or internship is posted on Handshake.

  • We exclude postings from companies that ask Manhattanville students to pay any funds up front as part of the hiring process so NEVER wire funds via Western Union, Money gram or any other service.

  • We ask of students to:
  • View the company website to ensure it is a legitimate site.
  • Check the contact email is coming from a company email address.
  • Never pay an employer for a Manhattanville listed internship.
  • Never give out financial information (bank account number, social security number, etc.) as part of applying for a job. Anyone who has your account information can use it.
  • Is the pay performance based or commission only? Then ask for the performance metrics or commission percentage in writing.
  • If it seems 'too good to be true’, then best to investigate a bit more.
  • Speak with your career adviser if you have any questions during your interview process

Should you have questions about the legitimacy of a company or posting, please contact the Center for Career Development at (914) 323-5484 or by email.

By using the Handshake recruiting system, it is understood that all students will abide by the Recruiting and Privacy Policies for Employers, Students and Alumni we have provided. Violations may be referred to the college judicial system.

Student/Alumni Statement of Responsibility

  • Respond appropriately to communication from the Center for Career Development and employers.
  • Adhere to schedules.
  • Thoroughly research organizations prior to interviewing and accepting positions. Notify the Center for Career Development immediately if you encounter questionable practices or irregularities in the employment process.
  • Demonstrate professional conduct. Students and alumni are expected to accept offers of employment in good faith and to notify employers of acceptance or non-acceptance of the offer; after accepting a position, students and alumni should withdraw their candidacy from all other opportunities. Students and alumni are also expected to behave professionally during all aspects of the job search and throughout the course of their employment.
  • Consider acceptance of employment as a commitment to that employer. Reneging on an accepted offer is not condoned by Center for Career Development and may result in loss of service to the student. If you have any hesitations about an offer, please consult with your career adviser.
