At this Symposium on “Hot Legal Issues in Higher Education” on Friday, February 9, from 9:30-12:30pm, you will hear from legal experts on current challenges facing higher education and will have the opportunity to discuss strategies for responding to these issues on your campus. 


9:30am      Welcome: Dr. Cindy Porter, Vice President for Student Affairs

9:45am      Featured presenters & topics

Joanna Silver, an attorney with Bond, Schoeneck & King, with 20 years of experience working with colleges and universities, will discuss aspects of immigration law, ranging from legal considerations when recruiting and enrolling students in the DACA category, to hiring personnel.

Monica Barrett, also an attorney with Bond, Schoeneck & King, previously served as Interim Senior Vice President and General Counsel at Rutgers University. She will discuss current issues related to Free Speech on campus, ranging from how colleges respond to faculty speech in the classroom, and electronic “speech,” to addressing student protests on campus.

Brian Rose will pick up where Monica leaves off with a focus on student conduct -- “the day after the protest” – and how to uphold students’ rights and responsibilities. Brian, who holds a JD from Georgetown University Law, is vice president of student affairs at Binghamton University.

11:10am    break

11:20am – 12:20pm    “Table Top” Activity. This interactive exercise will engage participants, affording the opportunity to apply knowledge to a real-world scenario. The presenters will field questions and suggest best practices for response and planning as we debrief.

12:20pm    Closing Remarks with Dr. Shelley Wepner, Dean for School of Education
