At this Symposium on “Legal Issues in Higher Education” on Friday, February 22, from 9:30-12:30pm, you will hear from legal experts on current challenges facing higher education and will have the opportunity to discuss strategies for responding to these issues on your campus. 


9:30am      Welcome: Dr. Cindy Porter, Vice President for Student Affairs

9:45am      Presenters & Topics

Seann Kalagher, Chief Compliance Officer/Title IX Coordinator at Manhattanville College, is the President Elect for the Association for Student Conduct Administration (ASCA). He will discuss implications of current changes to Title IX among other student conduct issues.

Melisa Gerecci Meyler, an attorney with Bond, Schoeneck & King, represents colleges and universities in litigation involving student rights and student discipline; employment law and discrimination law; and state and federal constitutional issues.  She will discuss current issues related to Title VI and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, including faculty and student claims of racial discrimination, and accommodating student disabilities in the classroom.

Sarah Luke,  also an attorney with Bond, Schoeneck & King, previously served as General Counsel and Vice President at Governors State University, and held in-house attorney positions at Wayne State University and Rutgers. She will speak on Free Speech on campus, ranging from how colleges respond to faculty speech in the classroom, and electronic “speech,” to addressing student protests on campus.


10:45am    Q & A with presenters

11:10am    break

11:20am – 12:20pm    “Table Top” Activity. This interactive exercise will engage participants, affording the opportunity to apply knowledge to a real-world scenario. The presenters will field questions and suggest best practices for response and planning as we debrief.

12:20pm    Closing Remarks with Dr. Shelley Wepner, Dean for School of Education
