Internship: Dr. Amparo Krestin, D.D.S.
How Carina located her internship
I was working on my senior thesis, Occurrence of Anomalous Dentition in Manhattanville College Students. I was conducting my research in the Biology lab and I needed volunteers to give me molds of their teeth. One day a friend showed up to as a volunteer and while we were preparing her mold she mentioned she was interning for Dr. Krestin, a local dentist, but wasn’t sure if she would be able to continue. I told her that if she could not continue the internship that I would be interested. I had already called several places in New York City and White Plains but I wasn’t getting anywhere and I was beginning to get a bit discouraged. After she left, I was excited but didn’t want to get my hopes up. She called me within a week and told me that Dr. Krestin wanted to meet me, and the rest is history.
Last semester I was interning twice a week, but due to my schedule changes this semester I am interning once a week.
I have had the opportunity to experience so much during my internship. I have been trained to assist with cleanings, dental impressions, fillings, and X-rays. I have learned so many dental terms and the names of the instruments—which is an experience most students would not have until well into dental school.
I am taking the Dental Admission Test (DAT) this month and I will apply to dental school after the test. After 4 years of dental school, I plan to do 4 years of orthodontic school with the ultimate goal being to open my own practice.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions and to network especially among friends (they are your friends so they want to help!). The friend that connected me with Dr. Krestin I saw on a regular basis. She wasn’t aware that I was looking for an internship until I told her. If I hadn’t asked, I would have never gotten my internship with Dr. Krestin.
