Eligibility

  • Students must have completed 30 credits of coursework and declared their major to get credit for an internship.
  • Students may not receive academic credit for the same internship twice.  To register a second internship with the same company, the student should be working in a different department, with a new supervisor, or with significantly increased responsibilities.
  • Students may only receive credit for an internship during the semester they work at the internship. For instance, a summer internship may not be registered for a course in the following Fall semester.

International Students

International Students must inform the Office of International Student Services (OISS) of any internship to obtain approval and work authorization.

See F-1 Student Internships for more information.

Internship Course Requests

Complete the Internship Course Request Form with all of the details of your internship, including supervisor contact information and expected responsibilities. You will be notified by the CCD if your request is accepted, and you will be emailed a personalized Learning Agreement for approval by certain faculty and staff.

Faculty Internship Advisors

Students usually register for internships under their major departments and must secure a Faculty  Internship Advisor from that department. They may also do one internship outside the department for interdisciplinary credit. Faculty Internship Advisors will sign off on the internship, advise the student during the Internship course, and submit a grade for the course.  Not every professor is authorized to be a Faculty Internship Advisor.  Contact the CCD or your major department if you need assistance in obtaining a Faculty Internship Advisor.

Signatures and Registration

  • Have your supervisor at your internship sign Page 1 of your Learning Agreement.
  • Meet with your Faculty Internship Advisor and fill out Page 2 of your Learning Agreement.  Have your Faculty Internship Advisor sign your Learning Agreement.
  • Bring your Learning Agreement to your Advisor for a signature (if different than your Faculty Internship Advisor).
  • International Students, meet with OISS for the required signature on your Learning Agreement.
  • Bring your Learning Agreement to the CCD for the final signature.  You will need to schedule 10-15 minutes to meet with the Internship Coordinator and have your paperwork approved and signed. At this time you will also be asked to sign a Code of Professional and Ethical Conduct agreement regarding the internship.
  • Bring your Learning Agreement to the Registrar to register.

Check-in and Evaluations

During Fall and Spring Semesters all students receiving credit for their Internships must attend a mandatory Mid-Semester Check-in Meeting at the CCD and submit an evaluation of their internship experience so far.  These are group sessions of 5-10 students and last approximately 30 minutes.  During Summer and Winter sessions, only evaluations are collected; students are not required to attend meetings. If you have any concerns prior to or after your meeting/evaluation, contact the CCD immediately so we can assist you.

Deadlines

The deadline to register an internship is the Add/Drop deadline set by the Registrar for the given semester. Extensions to register past the Add/Drop deadline may be granted on an individual basis. Contact the CCD for information.

Summer and Winter Internships

As for-credit Internships are registered as courses through the Registrar’s office, students must pay per-credit tuition if they wish to receive credit for their Summer or Winter Internship.  Contact the Registrar’s Office or Student Accounts for pricing details.

Hour Requirement

During the semester of the internship, students must work 40 hours per credit earned. Please make sure you are on track to fulfill this hour requirement:

Credits Desired Hours Required
3 120
2.5 100
2 80
1.5 60
1 40

Helpful  Hints

  • Give yourself enough time to get signatures – you may not be able to get everyone’s signature immediately.
  • Check your the email account you provided often for updates from the CCD.
  • Double-check your registration on WebAdvisor to make sure you are registered correctly – it is much easier to fix mistakes at the beginning of the semester!
