Wednesday, November 9th, at 4:30 p.m. in the Library Current Periodicals Room

As the need for energy continues to rise and landfill space becomes more limited, conserving our limited supply of resources is paramount. One effective, low-cost strategy for resource conservation is recycling. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (2008), although recycling rates have increased from just over 10% municipal solid waste generated in 1980 to over 30% in 2007, a large amount of recyclable materials still ends up in landfills.  Fortunately, social scientists have begun developing persuasive appeals designed to promote conservation behaviors.  Professor Schreer will discuss one such approach using social norms.
