The College awards several kinds of honors for academic distinction. Honors Convocation, which is held prior to Commencement, recognizes students who have completed the Honors Program in their major or been recommended by their departments for distinction in the major, those who have achieved the designation of Honors in the portfolio, and those who have earned other distinguished awards and fellowships. The honors awarded at graduation include the following:
- Portfolio Honors
During the senior year an optional formal review of qualified portfolios is undertaken by the Board on Academic Standards. If awarded Portfolio Honors, a student; transcript and diploma will reflect the distinction.
- Latin Honors
These awards are based on the following cumulative grade point averages: cum laude 3.7, magna cum laude 3.8, and summa cum laude 3.9
- Manhattanville Honors
This award means that the student has achieved a 3.6 cumulative grade point average.
- Departmental Honors
These are conferred by each department according to its own criteria. Normally, they are based on at least a B+ average in major courses and a similar level of achievement on the senior evaluation. (The awarding of departmental honors, which are determined at the end of a student; academic career, is separate from the honors program which exists in various departments and which is outlined elsewhere in this catalog.)
