The teaching staff of the ELI are all qualified teachers of English to speakers of other languages. Each teacher has an MA in TESOL and brings to the program extensive teaching experience.

Judith H. Lewis, Director
A native New Yorker, Judith (Judy) Lewis received her Bachelor's degree (major in Government) from Wheaton College, Massachusetts, and her Master's in TESOL (Teacher of English as a Second Language) from Manhattanville College. An experienced ESL teacher and administrator, Judy has been Director of the ELI since 1999. Her interest in working with international students began during her formative years when her family was host to students from countries such as France, Iran, Brazil, Germany, and Norway. In her spare time, Judy likes to spend time with family and friends, read, play the piano, cook, and play tennis.

Marguerite Salomon, Full-Time Faculty
Marguerite Salomon has always lived in New York. In her "past life" she worked for IBM. While at IBM she had the opportunity to do extensive traveling both domestically and internationally. Throughout her career at IBM she always planned to have a second career in an academic setting. After she left IBM she furthered her education by achieving a Master's of Arts in Teaching (MAT) as well as a post Master's degree in TESOL from Manhattanville College. She gained teaching experience at several local schools. Now she has a great position working with students from all over the world. She learns something new everyday! She loves her husband, cooking, gardening, reading, traveling, walking and her little dog, William Wallace.

Carly Tam, Full-Time Faculty
Having discovered a love for languages early in life, Carly Tam received her Bachelor’s degree in linguistics from Binghamton University and continued on to Teacher’s College, Columbia University, where she obtained her Master’s in TESOL. She has experience teaching in a variety of ESL programs and also as a language learner herself, having studied three different languages throughout her academic career. In her moments of spare time, she enjoys baking, reading, dancing and playing guitar.
