Manhattanville to Sponsor Women's Golf in 2012-2013
Tuesday, 13 September 2011 11:39

Purchase, NY Manhattanville College will continue the recent growth of its Athletic Department next season, as Athletic Director Keith Levinthal announced the addition of women's golf as the school's 22nd varsity sport on Monday. The program is set to commence play during the 2012-13 school year under the direction of head coach Eric Lang, who also coaches the nationally recognized Valiant women's hockey team during the winter.

"I am very excited that Manhattanville will introduce women's golf as our next varsity sport," Levinthal said. "Women's golf is one of the fastest growing sports in the NCAA, and I expect it to follow in the footsteps of our men's program and become yet another great athletic offering for student-athletes at Manhattanville. As our department continues to grow, we will continue to provide opportunities for our student-athletes to succeed at the highest level possible."

As the program's first head coach, Lang will take on the responsibility of building the program from the ground up, beginning with the recruiting of potential student-athletes.

"I am very, very excited to have been given this opportunity and privilege to coach the women's golf team, and I look to continue to build on the great winning tradition of athletics here at Manhattanville," Lang said. "Anytime you are given the opportunity to start a program from scratch it is extremely exciting. Westchester County is in the golf Mecca of the world, and it provides a terrific opportunity for student-athletes to continue playing NCAA golf while getting a great education right outside of New York City."

"Coach Lang has had a very positive influence on our women's hockey team over the last three years, and I expect him to bring the same level of success and enthusiasm to our women's golf program as well," Levinthal added.

The program will field its first team in the fall of 2012 as part of the Middle Atlantic Conference. The conference first sponsored the sport in 2010-11, with the Valiants joining current members Albright College, Alvernia University, Eastern University (new in 2011-12), FDU-Florham, Misericordia University and Stevenson University. As the seventh team in the conference, Manhattanville's addition allows the MAC to receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Div. III Championships.

With the addition of women's golf, Manhattanville now sponsors 22 varsity sports, including eight sports that have been added since 2007. Only three institutions on the Middle Atlantic Conferences sponsor more sports at the varsity level than Manhattanville.

Any current or potential student-athletes interested in participating in the Valiant women's golf program are encouraged to contact head coach Eric Lang at lang@govaliants.com.
