|Second Annual Valiant Week|
The Manhattanville community will have the opportunity to learn about the history of the college during the second annual Valiant Week hosted by the First Year Program and First Year Advisory Committee.
Valiant Week begins Monday, September 16 with college archivist, Lauren Ziarko, sharing images of the 170 year history of Manhattanville. This presentation will act as a conversation about the college’s history and how it connects to our present and future.
Tuesday’s conversation will focus on the global community that Manhattanville is a part of. Ali Hoyt ’14, an art history major; will give a presentation on her study abroad in West Africa followed by a panel discussion “Why Africa Matters” with professors Mohamed Mbodj, Don Nanjira and Deborah Saleeby-Mulligan.
On Wednesday, Professor Peter Gardella will lead a walking tour of O’Byrne Chapel that will explore how it has changed and evolved since its original construction. Later that night Men's Head Basketball Coach and First-Year Instructor Pat Scanlon, organized a panel discussion that will explore the concept of leadership as it relates to our mission.
On Thursday, Manhattanville's "First Lady," Jean Strauss, will lead a tour of Heritage Hall, showing the connecting threads between Manhattanville's past, present and future. That night a presentation by Gretchel L. Hathaway, PhD, Chief Diversity Officer, Office of Diversity and Inclusion, Union College, NY, will look at whether Mother Dammann’s speech, Principles versus Prejudices, is applicable to the 21st century.
The week concludes on Friday, September 20 with singer/songwriter Pete Seeger, a long-time champion of social justice, discussing the power of words. The Master of Fine Arts in Writing Program organized the event.
Gillian Hannum, professor of Art History and an organizer of Valiant Week hopes that this year “students who attend these events will leave with a deeper appreciation of Manhattanville's mission and pride in our institution."
“I'm really excited about attending all of the events and hope to see a great turnout,” she said.
