|Manhattanville College Expands Its Curriculum, Connecting the Liberal Arts to Career-focused Degrees|
Manhattanville College, known internationally for its liberal arts curriculum, will offer its undergraduates more ways to connect to exciting career opportunities. New degree programs at the College will now include majors in marketing, accounting, digital media production, and sport studies.
"These exciting new programs offer students the ideal opportunity of combining the strengths of our liberal arts curriculum with practical, career oriented programs that will well position graduating students for professional advancement," said Gail Simmons, Ph.D., provost and vice president of academic affairs at Manhattanville. "To be a truly competitive institution, we need to leverage our historically strong liberal arts curriculum, combining it with new career-focused directions that 'bring liberal arts to life'," she said.
Here are more details about the new degree programs:
• "Students with an Accounting major can improve their chances of finding employment in professional accounting firms, corporations, non-profit organizations and government.," said David R. Borker, Ph.D., MAcc/MBA, CPA who will head up the new accounting degree program. "Accounting is the language of business."
• In the Sport Studies program, students will focus on all aspects of the sports world including the business of sports, physical education, sports medicine, sports history, sports psychology, and sports journalism. "Internships opportunities will be available with prominent professional sport teams, leagues and agencies," said Lawson Bowling, Ph.D., professor of History and Sport Studies director. Students will also have the opportunity to transition from the B.A. in Sport Studies to the College's unique Master's in Sports Business Management, or its highly regarded Master's in Physical Education.
• The B.A. program in Digital Media Production emphasizes the preparation and presentation of creative digital content in multiple media formats and will concentrate on four key areas, according to Brian Snee, Ph.D., associate professor and chair of the Department of Communications Studies: writing for media; multimedia graphics and design; audio and video production, and media theory and analysis.
• "The B.A./B.S. program in Marketing will provide core knowledge of theory, concepts and principles, as well as the methods and application of effective marketing techniques to prepare each student for a career in the marketing field," said William C. Perkins, Ph.D., chair, Department of Economics, Finance and Management.
Students will examine the flow of goods and services from the producer to the consumer. They will explore and analyze consumer characteristics and behavior, the impact of advertising and communication, market research techniques, and international marketing systems.
