Professor Christine Dehne Wins Art Grant

Christine DehneChristine Dehne, Associate Professor of Communications at Manhattanville College, was awarded a 2013 Arts Alive Project Grant from ArtsWestchester for her live action/Puppetry project titled "Under the Tree".

"I'm very flattered to have been selected for the grant," Dehne said. "The project is an exciting one for me, and I'm really looking forward to the residency and the ability to immerse myself in the production."

Under the Tree is a performance within an installation and is intended for a young audience. The narrative is of a young girl running away to her own back yard and encountering a magical world under a tree. While there she interacts with nature, runs through a gambit of emotions, and eventually she decides to return home.

"This play will not take place on a stage, but rather within the gallery which will be set up to recreate the magical world under the tree, and the audience will be seated within that installation as well," Dehne said. "So it will be a very nontraditional theatrical experience."

Dehne is collaborating on the project with her creative partner Lauren Jost, who is the Director of Spellbound Theatre.

The project will be created during a residency at Miranda Arts Project Space at 6 North Pearl St in Port Chester, NY. The residency runs from the middle of March through the middle of April and will culminate in performances of the play Dehne's team develops within the art installation they build. Those performances will be the weekends of April 13th and April 20th
