|John Micek '92 Gets Dream Job as Editorial Page Editor|
After working his way through different newspapers, Micek is beginning a new career as the Editorial Page Editor for the Patriot News in Harrisburg, PA.
As an English major, Micek always knew he wanted to spend his life writing. It was not until joining Touchstone as a freshman that he realized working as a journalist could combine his love of writing and political science.
"You're exposed to a wide variety of things so to an extent you need to come to the table with a broad depth of knowledge" said Micek. "I think that's one of the things Manhattanville gave me."
After graduating from Manhattanville, Micek went on to work at the Register Citizen of Torrington and the Journal Inquirer in Connecticut. In 1997, he started graduate school to earn a Masters in Journalism from Northwestern University. After working as the Capitol Reporter for The Morning Call in Allentown, PA, the challenge of being the editor of an editorial page intrigued Micek.
"I've gotten to this point in my career where the voice of an editorial page writer, a columnist, is the one I've embraced the most," stated Micek, "It's the one where you can have the most direct impact on people. And you can call attention to things that you can't as a beat reporter."
Micek added, "I sat down at my desk when I was 29 and looked up and I was 42. The last 13 years have really been the defining moment of my career."
