|Meet Andrew McLaren|
After five years in the Marines, a movie, and two reality television shows, and a book in the works, transfer student Andrew McLaren is ready to hit the books and focus on his education. The Yonkers-native enters Manhattanville College as a history major with hopes to study physical fitness and eventually get his Ph.D.
What made you decide to go back to school?
I think education is extremely important. I want to get a Ph.D. eventually. Education is what strengthens the world and makes us valuable to our country. It helps unite people and what will lead to world peace eventually is getting rid of ignorance and in order to get rid of ignorance we need to increase education.
How did you hear about Manhattanville College?
One day I was trying to find SUNY Purchase and I happened to see Manhattanville College. I had already heard of it, but I stumbled upon it and it's only five minutes away from where I am living right now. I thought it looked really cool. I liked the way it looked, so I went in and everyone was really nice. They were filming a movie there with Tina Fey and Paul Rudd, and I was like okay I like the relaxing atmosphere of being here in the country.
What are you looking forward to the most about coming to Manhattanville?
Just relaxing a little bit and obviously studying and learning about things that fascinate me. I really like history and old things. I collect coins because to me it's fascinating to think that a coin that I have from the 1700s or 1800s, to think how many people may have had this coin in their pocket. To me that really intrigues me, that I might be holding a coin that Abraham Lincoln might have had in his pocket.
You have done two reality TV shows — can you tell me a little bit about each of them?
The first one was called Weaponizers. It was on the Discovery Channel. I would take cars armor them and put guns on them and then we would go to underground caves and drive them around battling each other.
The second reality TV show was called Stars Earn Stripes and it's on NBC now. A celebrity is paired with a military operative and you compete in challenges to raise money for a charity, "Got Your 6." The biggest difference (between Weaponizers) is that you get eliminated. (I'm paired with) Dolvett Quince, the trainer from The Biggest Loser.
What has the experience been like being on Stars Earn Stripes?
It was cool. I got to meet a lot of good people, like Terry Crews (The Expendables) is a really big actor. I got to hang out with him, Sarah Palin and her husband Todd Palin, and another operative, Chris Kyle, who has a bestselling book right now called American Sniper. It was amazing! So, I definitely got to meet a lot of really cool people and do some awesome stuff. I was out in California for about a month.
