Manhattanville College will host international artists Anne Desmet, Vijay Kumar, and Jackie Newell for a gallery talk and demonstration, and a reception on Tuesday, Feb. 11.
The artists are visiting the College to celebrate the Arthur M. Berger Gallery’s current exhibit, “From Both Sides of the Pond,” which features their etchings and engravings. For the exhibit, each artist uses their own unique experiences with architecture and stylistic approaches to art to help tell the stories of the evolving urban life in two of the of the world most famous cities: New York and London.
Desmet, who currently lives in London, shows the generational development of time and it’s affects on the architecture of the city with her wood engravings and linocuts. She has also won more than 30 national and international awards and has had more than 20 solo exhibitions.
Kumar began making cityscapes because he was fascinated by the buildings in his native India. He hasn’t stopped making cityscapes as he has travelled throughout the Middle East and Europe, and now the United States as he lives in New York City.
Newell spent five years living in New York City before returning to the United Kingdom, and her work is influenced by the urban metropolis and worksites in flux. Several of her etchings appearing at Manhattanville were also recently featured in an exhibit at the Bankside Gallery in London.
Manhattanville College is located at 2900 Purchase Street, Purchase, N.Y., 10577.
