Manhattanville College received a grant of $100,000 from the George I. Alden Trust, a private foundation located in Worcester, MA that previously awarded a grant to the college in 2006 to establish a Mac lab in Berman Student Center. The grant will support the renovation of the greenhouse atop Brownson Hall, which was built in 1984, but has remained unusable since 2005.
Grant funds will be used to replace the existing greenhouse structure, repair the roof on which it sits, purchase equipment, furnishings and plants and update the electrical, water and climate control systems. Once the greenhouse is restored and fully equipped, it will be utilized by a broad cross-section of students, with significant potential to increase participation in science while promoting scientific and environmental literacy. Not only will the renovation of the greenhouse enhance the learning experience of students taking courses in Biology and Environmental Studies, it will also support Manhattanville's campus-wide efforts in sustainability as well as improve the external appearance of Brownson Hall.
