The School of Education recently received approval from the New York State Education Department to offer an Advanced Certificate Health and Wellness Specialist program.
The 18-credit certificate program consists of an organized series of graduate-level courses designed to increase the content knowledge of individuals teaching health classes in K-12 school settings. Upon completion the graduate will be able to apply for an initial health certificate by individual evaluation through New York State Education Department.
"We are very excited to offer our new program for Health and Wellness Specialist which will provide professionals, alumni, and current students with advanced certification to address individual and societal health needs and issues in their K-12 classroom to promote the importance of living a healthy life," states Shelley Wepner, Dean of the School of Education.
Developed by Professor Robert Schmidlein (Physical Education) the program aims to provide a holistic approach to health with a focus on educating candidates to become innovative and progressive health advocates in their respective communities.
Manhattanville will begin offering the certificate program in Spring 2012. The program hopes to attract physical education and biology teachers interested in obtaining an initial health teaching certificate and recent Manhattanville graduate alumni and graduate alumni from other colleges. Applicants must have a master's degree and be certified in physical education or biology education.
