A Conversation between Jeffrey Laurenti & Ambassador Kamal

Jeffrey Laurenti, one of the leading experts on the Middle East and global security issues, is currently Senior Fellow and Director of Foreign Policy Programs at The Century Foundation, a research organization that undertakes timely and critical analyses of major economic, political, and social institutions and issues. He is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the author of several books and publications including Afghanistan Negotiating Peace March 2011 Report and Afghanistan Agonists: The Many Stakes in a Thirty Year War. Previously Laurenti was Deputy Director of the United Nations Foundation's United Nations & Global Security Initiative.

Ambassador Kamal, former Permanent Representative of Pakistan, United Nations, will also be on hand to address the many rapidly unfolding world events in the Middle East including the demise of Obama Bin Laden.

Afghans largely recognize that their country has made considerable gains over the past decade, project director Jeffrey Laurenti argues in this background paper for the task force, but unreconciled internal divisions and the conflicting priorities of Afghans' foreign friends have aborted the country's return to stability.
