Mikki Shaw taught high school English prior to getting her
doctorate and teaching full time at the college level. Her
experience teaching in secondary school -on both the east
and west coast, in traditional and alternative schools, in the
suburbs as well as the inner city - has reinforced a real
commitment to public education and to students at risk.
Previously an an Assistant Professor of English Education at Teachers
College, Columbia University for ten years, Mikki is currently the Director of the Jump Start Accelerated MA Program for Teacher Education. She is also Program Coordinator of the New York Consortium for Excellence and Equity, a regional group of school districts committed to achieving success for all students.
Mikki is especially interested in:
- Recognizing and working with issues of diversity in the context of the classroom and
- Mentoring and working with new teachers to develop skills and to reflect upon their classroom practices.
Her publications include writing about effective professional development for veteran teachers and about effective strategies for teaching in diverse schools.
