Ellis I. Barowsky, Ph.D.
Ellis I. Barowsky, Ph.D. is an associate professor in the department of Special Education who has worked in the classroom as well as having served as a supervisor of teacher candidates throughout much of his career. He has been Professor of Special Education at Hunter College where he had taught for 32 years.
As a licensed clinical psychologist, Dr. Barowsky has been active in the areas of behavioral disorders and developmental disabilities where his experience has encompassed both graduate teacher education and clinical work. He serves and holds office on multiple agency boards for individuals with developmental disabilities as well as the NYS Office of Persons with Developmental Disabilities Surrogate Decision Making Committee. His involvement with individuals with emotional and behavior disorders extends to the legal system where he has authored or collaborated on multiple federal grants for training teachers of adjudicated or incarcerated children and adolescents.
He also serves as an expert witness in the courts to evaluate the competence of adolescents with emotional and behavioral disabilities for trial. Among his 37 presentations, book chapters, and peer-reviewed publications in education, psychology, and medicine, one can find an array of issues related to the needs of children with developmental problems and emotional and behavioral disorders.
Dr. Barowsky is the chairman of the Board of Directors of Jawonio, Inc., a rehabilitation agency in Rockland County, serving 5000 individuals a year. He is also a member of the Department of Psychiatry at Nyack Hospital.
