Initial CertificationTeacher certification is conferred by New York State upon application by the student to the state education department following recommendation by the School of Education on behalf of degree or program completers. Initial certification, in most subject areas, requires liberal arts prerequisites, which can be completed at any regionally accredited institution of higher education, must be reported on an official transcript and must have earned a letter grade of C or above. Please check your program plan for the required liberal arts coursework necessary for your program. Eligibility
Professional Certification Requirements:1. Complete a Master's Degree in a "functionally related area." 2. Work for at least three years as a teacher in an appropriate setting. A student with initial certification may receive professional certification by applying to the New York State Education Department. If a student holds initial certification and is completing the requirements for professional certification through a Manhattanville College MAT or MPS program, the College will reccomend the student for professional certification.
