The Mathematics program has received national recognition from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics
The Secondary Mathematics Education Department at Manhattanville College prepares undergraduate and graduate students to teach Middle Childhood/Adolescence Education (Grades 5-12) Mathematics. All of our programs are aligned with the New York State Department requirements for certifying teachers. Our programs also incorporate standards as expressed by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and the Mathematics requirements of New York State. In addition, Manhattanville's conceptual framework permeates all our endeavors.
We prepare our teacher candidates to deliver inquiry-based and problem-based instruction in the classroom in order to develop the critical thinking and analytical skills of their students. We emphasize a hands-on, minds-on, active learning approach in the classroom with one role of the teacher being a coach and facilitator.
We believe that research in mathematics content informs practice and mathematics teachers should be au courant and cutting-edge aware in their respective content areas.
Our goal is to graduate highly qualified teacher candidates who can implement a Socratic constructivist approach in the classroom using state-of-the-art educational technology. Our teacher candidates will be highly qualified with regard to mathematics content area knowledge, pedagogical content knowledge and the art of teaching skills.
