Literacy Education

soe literacy-250x250-literacy research

In the Literacy Department we are committed to helping PK-12 teachers foster optimum literacy achievement in every child. We ground our work in multiple theoretical and research perspectives, with an emphasis on equity and expanding understandings of what it means to be literate across cultures, socioeconomic status, and gender.

Our Programs

The Literacy Department at Manhattanville offers six outstanding literacy programs that lead to New York's literacy certificate:

• Four Master of Professional Studies (MPS) programs

• Two Advanced Certification (CERT) programs

The MPS Literacy Specialist Degrees are 37-credit programs that lead to a Literacy Specialist certificate in either Birth-Grade 6 or Grades 5-12.

We also offer two additional degree programs in collaboration with the Special Education Department. They lead to dual certification at two levels: Literacy Specialist and Special Education (Birth-Grade 6) or (Grades 5-12). Both of these 45 credit programs require a bachelor's degree and prior certification.

The 25-credit advanced certification programs, CERT- Literacy (Birth -Grade 6) or (Grades 5-12) require Master Degrees and a prior certification.

The Literacy Department is the editorial team of the New State Reading Association's annual journal, The Language and Literacy Spectrum. The New York State Reading Association is an affiliate of the International Reading Association. The mission of the New York State Reading Association parallels Manhattanville College's and the Literacy Department's to promote a literate, democratic society valuing lifelong learning for its diverse cultures.
