Purpose of the Exit Portfolio
The exit portfolio is intended to provide an authentic means to assess Leadership Candidates’ fulfillment of the ELCC leadership competencies. Portfolios are part of a performance-based assessment process that enables a Leadership Candidate to self-assess and reflect on his/her knowledge, skills, and dispositions as a future leader. By design, the exit portfolio seeks to provide a:
- Framework for self-assessment and evaluation
- Record and display of professional growth and achievement
- Foundation for career-long, self-directed professional development
- Portfolios should be submitted prior to the anticipated graduation date. Target portfolio submission dates (July, November, and April) reflect dates that will meet graduation deadlines.
- Each exit portfolio is reviewed by two certified administrators.
- Portfolios are rated using the exit portfolio rubric (refer to rubric). The critical portfolio elements are rated on a scale that ranges from “limited /minimal performance”, “satisfactory performance”, and “exceptional performance”. Based on the composite points, there are three possible final ratings: “with distinction”, “pass”, and “fail”.
- A portfolio must receive at least a pass from both reviewers. If this is not the case, the portfolio will be returned for a resubmission. The Candidate will be provided specific feedback to guide the revision.
- Portfolios are not returned after final submission. It is strongly recommended that each Candidate make his/her own personal copy.
**As of summer 2012 E-portfolios will be required. Hard copy portfolios may be submitted by Leadership Candidates who entered the program when e-portfolios were not required.
- One semester before you are ready to submit your e-portfolio (usually during your school or district internship) communicate with Dr. Lenora Boehlert, the Educational Leadership Coordinator. She will arrange to get you an e-portfolio account and training (one-hour workshop).
Organization of Exit Portfolio
The portfolio should have a clear organization and sections should be labeled and aligned to that organization. A template is posted for you to use as a model in the E-Portfolio link that can be accessed from the Mville website. Look for “Educational Leadership Exit Portfolio”. For traditional hard copy e-portfolios, use the format below as a guide.

- Section I: Introduction
- Describe the organization of the portfolio.
- Section II: Leadership Standards
- Standard #1: Vision
- Standard #2: Teaching & Learning Environment
- Standard #3: Management of Organization
- Standard #4: Community Outreach
- Standard #5: Professionalism
- Standard #6: Political and Larger Community Context
Each standard should be introduced with a reflection essay that addresses the Leadership Candidate’s growth and competency in this domain. Identify artifacts that support or provide evidence of competency in the standard. Link artifacts to relevant coursework completed at Manhattanville. Include at least three artifacts within each standard. Candidates may include artifacts from 1) class assignments and 2) from professional work in the field. Note: Each standard should be labeled as a separate subsection.
- Section III: Conclusion
Include a summary statement (approximately 2 pages) that identifies future goals for growth and means to achieve that growth.
Exit Portfolio Checklist
- When you are ready, register for the Exit Portfolio as you would any course. Note: Once this is done, Graduate Advising Office will forward the exit portfolio guidelines and exit portfolio rubric.
- Review the exit portfolio guidelines.
- Refer to the Exit Portfolio Rubric to prepare and to self-assess.
- Take time to reflect and take stock of your growth in relation to the leadership standards.
- Double space and use 12 pt font in your written entries.
- Proof the portfolio.
- Check APA citations and references (refer to APA material on the library website)
- Carefully select artifacts.
- Consider asking a colleague to review your portfolio.
- Submit portfolio (for hard copy) to Graduate Advising Office or contact Dr. Lenora Boehlert, the Educational Leadership Coordinator, to let her know you are ready to have your exit portfolio reviewed.
- Be sure to set your privacy settings on your e-portfolio to give access to the 2 reviewers.
Educational Leadership Exit Portfolio Communication & Overall Process
- Student registers for Exit Portfolio the semester he/she wants portfolio reviewed.
- Educational Leadership Coordinator (Lenora Boehlert) forwards names of students to Alison Carson to request e-portfolio accounts and to set up training.
- Graduate Advising Office (Larry Krute) will send out reminders 3-4 times a year that will include registering for an exit portfolio review.
- Graduate Advising will forward the Educational Leadership Exit Portfolio Guidelines and Exit Portfolio Rubric to students who registered. Note: This information should be shared with Candidates at the initial New Student Orientation and during the school/district internships.
- Candidates should contact Lenora Boehlert when they are ready to have their portfolios reviewed.
- Lenora Boehlert will arrange for the two reviewers and confirm that students have privacy settings to allow access.
- When the reviews are done, reviewers should forward the rubrics to Lenora Boehlert.
- Lenora Boehlert should then do the following: a) report the grade to Graduate Advising (Larry Krute or Jody Green); b) enter the two reviewers’ names in the Educational Leadership Exit Portfolio log in Graduate Advising Office; and c) forward the exit portfolio rubrics to Renee Roff to enter as gateway grades.
