CER Part I
Demonstrate Understanding and Application of Key Elements of Instruction
This section has five parts. Each part includes a well written, 2 page essay followed by a copy of the lesson plan(s) you are discussing in the essay. For Part 1 you must use a variety of lesson plans you have written in Childhood Math Methods (EDU 5107), Childhood Methods for Social Studies and the Arts (EDU 5112) and Childhood Science and Drug Education (EDU 5108). You may not use a specific lesson plan more than once. You must include at least one lesson from Math, Science and Social Studies.
The following five topics are key components of instruction:
- Integrating and applying knowledge for instruction
- Adaptation to diverse students
- Development of critical thinking and problem solving
- Active engagement in learning
- Communication to foster collaboration
Reflect on the lesson plans you have written in Math (EDU 5107), Social Studies (EDU 5112) and Science (EDU 5108). For each of the five key elements of instruction, select one (1) lesson plan that best demonstrates your application of that specific component of instruction. Write a 2-3 page essay discussing how you have integrated the key elements in each lesson plan and how those elements have enhanced teaching and learning in the lesson plan. Insert an copy of each of the lesson plans after the essay.
1. Integrating and applying knowledge for instruction (ACEI 3.1)
Describe and discuss how you have planned and implemented instruction based on your knowledge of students, learning theory, connections across the curriculum, curricular goals, and community. Use and attach 1 lesson plan.
2. Adaptation to diverse students (ACEI 3.2)
Elementary students differ in their development and approaches to learning. Describe and discuss how you have created instructional opportunities that are adapted to diverse students. Use and attach 1 lesson plan.
3. Development of critical thinking and problem solving (ACEI 3.3)
Describe and discuss your understanding of and use a variety of teaching strategies that encourage elementary students development of critical thinking and problem solving. Use and attach 1 lesson plan.
4. Active engagement in learning (ACEI 3.4)
Demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of individual and group motivation and behavior among students at the K-6 level. Describe and discuss how your have designed a lesson that fosters active engagement in learning, self motivation, and positive social interaction to create supportive learning environments. Use and attach 1 lesson plan.
5. Communication to foster collaboration (ACEI 3.5)
Describe and discuss how you have applied your knowledge and understanding of effective verbal, nonverbal, and media communication techniques to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the elementary classroom. Use and attach 1 lesson plan.
Appendix for Part 1
Include the Scope and Sequence and graded rubric for your Science and Social Studies unit plans. Include the graded rubrics for your Math lesson plans.
CER Part II
Assessment for Instruction
6. Assessment for instruction (ACEI 4.0)
Reflect on the Literacy Profile completed in EDU 5274, Methods of Teaching Literacy and Language Arts II, or the Assessment Project EDU 5380, or the Comprehensive Evaluation Report completed in EDU5083, Assessment of Students with Learning and Behavior Problems. Write a 2-3 page essay demonstrating your understanding of the use formal and informal assessment strategies to plan, evaluate and strengthen instruction that will promote continuous intellectual, social, and emotional development of elementary school students. Give specific examples from the paper you select.
Attach a copy of your graded Literacy Profile or Comprehensive Evaluation Report.

CER Part III
Professional Growth, Reflection and Evaluation
Synthesis of knowledge is a lifetime process for a professional. Examine and analyze the essays you have written for Part I and Part II of this Culminating Experience Report. When these six essays are examined as a whole, they indicate your ability to think critically and to apply discipline specific knowledge for the purposes of planning, designing instructional strategies, and assessment. Reflect on these essays as well as your coursework, field experience, and educational practice in light of research on teaching. Write a 3-4 page essay in which you:
Discuss how you, as a teacher, will continually evaluate the effects of your professional decisions and actions on students. How will you use classroom observation, information about students, and research as sources for evaluating the outcomes of teaching and learning? What will you use as a basis for experimenting with, reflecting on, and revising practice?
Instructions for Assembling Your CER
1. Place all documents in the correct order in a 3-ring binder.
2. Insert labeled section dividers between each essay.
3. Write your first and last name on the cover and spine of the binder.
4. Essays must be typed in 12 point font using Times New Roman, Cambria, or Arial.
5. Use 1.5 line spacing and 1 inch margins for all essays.
