Ms. Duncan-Poitier is a successful and experienced leader in the field of education. Beginning with leadership positions at City University of New York at Queens College, York College, and Bronx Community College and advancing to the position of Senior Deputy Commissioner of Education P-16 for the New York State Education Department, Johanna Duncan-Poitier has demonstrated her leadership skills in developing comprehensive plans for higher education and teacher preparation, and support for student achievement.

Johanna Duncan-Poitier has been recognized for her accomplishments with numerous state and national honors, including the New York State Governor's Work Force Champions Award; the Governor's Out-standing Leadership Award; and the President of the United States Award for Excellence for administering science, mathematics, and engineering programs and initiatives in New York State. She has also earned the Presidential Citation for Service and Dedication to the People of New York State; Doctor of Laws (Honorary) from Saint Joseph's College, Brooklyn, New York; and Doctor of Humane Letters (Honorary) from D'Youville College, Buffalo, New York.
