|Generous Gift Helps Teachers Teach Reading|
We are truly pleased to announce an extraordinary gift of $1.2 million over 3 years from Manhattanville alumna and former Trustee, Sandra Priest Rose, for the creation of the Rose Institute for Literacy and Learning in the Manhattanville School of Education (SOE).
With the establishment of the Rose Institute for Literacy and Learning, the SOE, as part of our Literacy and Special Education Master’s and Certification Program, will offer courses in the phonics-based methodology endorsed by the Reading Reform Foundation of NY. A Reading Reform Professor/Director will be hired by Manhattanville to teach these courses and conduct the yearlong in-school practicum. To launch the program and ensure the continuity of the Reading Reform methodology and training, a current Reading Reform of NY instructor will initially oversee the coursework. The Rose Institute for Literacy and Learning Program is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2014, when the first of two courses will be offered. The second course is scheduled for fall 2014.
The Rose Institute for Literacy and Learning is the outcome of a successful pilot program in which the Reading Reform Foundation of NY methodology was implemented in one of the Manhattanville College School of Education’s Professional Development Schools, the Thomas A. Edison School in Port Chester, NY. Edison and eight other local Professional Development Schools comprise the SOE’s signature community outreach initiative, Changing Suburbs Institute® (CSI).
We are both honored and excited that Sandra Rose is entrusting Manhattanville with continuing the legacy of her lifelong commitment to literacy education through the establishment of the Rose Institute for Literacy and Learning.
