The Tests

Who Takes the New York State Teacher Certification Exams (NYSTCE)?

All candidates looking for New York State initial certification must take:

  • LAST- Liberal Arts and Science Test
  • ATS-W - Assessment of Teaching Skills-Written
  • CST - Content Speciality Test (in every subject in which you are seeking certification)

You can get more information about the tests and register at  http://www.nystce.nesinc.com or call the office of Graduate Advising 914-323-5366.

NOTE: Candidates applying for certification on or after May 1st, 2014 will be required to take certain new New York State teacher certification exams.

Thus, anyone graduating in FALL 2013 or earlier is under the CURRENT regulations. You will have until April 30, 2014 to meet certification requirements if you haven't met them at the time of graduation. If you apply for certification and satisfy the requirements before May 1, 2014, you can take the CURRENT exams, NO e-portfolio.

If you are applying for certification on or after May 1, 2014, NEW exams (except for Content Specialty Test, where you can take the current version in case the new revised CST is not ready yet) AND e-portfolio are required.
