What being an alumna means to me…
Coming from a preparatory school in Massachusetts, I was looking for a college with a focus on the student through small class sizes. To me, this type of environment was important because I wanted to know my professors and not feel like I was just a number in a lecture hall. I will always remember visiting Manhattanville for the first time in the spring, when the beautiful campus was in bloom, and the busy students were talking on the quad or running off to classes. With New York City as a backdrop, I knew it was the college for me.
Manhattanville proved to be just what I wanted and so much more. Given the small class sizes, it provided the opportunity of knowing your professors and classmates well. The environment was supportive. Whether it was looking for an internship or extra help in a class, I always felt like I had the resources I needed at my fingertips. To me, Manhattanville will always represent the beginning of my adult life - providing me with the knowledge and tools needed to succeed in my career in corporate America and later to start my own business.
Shady Day Inc. was founded by Jennifer Odell (Manhattanville College Class of 1993) and Rita Vescera (Fordham University Class of 1993). Friends for many years, the two corporate women saw a need in the market place for sunscreen products that were easy to use and easily carried. Shady Day launched in 2006 with critical acclaim. Since the launch, Shady Day has received numerous prestigious recognitions such as Oprah Magazine’s “Love It”, Good Housekeeping Magazine’s Anti-Aging Award, The National Association of Parenting Publications (NAPPA) award, and the Golden Triangle from the American Academy of Dermatology.
