President Strauss' Note to the Community

It is with profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of Mary T. Clark RSCJ `39, beloved teacher, administrator, and friend of countless students, staff, faculty, and alumni at Manhattanville College. Sister Clark passed peacefully at the Teresian House in Albany, NY on Monday, September 1.

Sister Clark has left an indelible mark on the global community, and most importantly on the Manhattanville community. In her remarkable 60-year career as educator, administrator, and advocate, Sister Clark worked tirelessly to live a lifetime dedicated to the advancement of students in the noble tradition of the Religious of the Sacred Heart. Admired for her intellect, compassion, native wit, and true sense of caring, Sister Clark’s legacy is the invaluable impact she had on literally thousands of lives throughout her long and remarkable life.

But above all, her friendship will remain a constant reminder of her legacy, and its meaning was so eloquently summed up during her own remarks at the 100th Birthday Celebration held for her last October here on campus. “But what is visible here is that acquisition of your friendship because I value you all, not simply as former students and former faculty colleagues but I value each one of you and your uniqueness as a friend. And the love that comes from a friend is freer than any kind of love that could be discussed or written about.”

We will always remember and cherish the memory of Sister Clark’s great pride and love for Manhattanville.
