Barbara is a Senior who has truly enjoyed volunteering and working with various programs at the Duchesne Center. Her desire to reach out to the community and work directly with other people led her to join the Duchesne first as a volunteer. She was later nominated and received the Duchesne Scholarship. Over the years, Barbara has been very involved with the Mentoring Kids program, a program that consists of academic and social enrichment after-school activities for children from a shelter. Barbara grew very fond of the kids, and has volunteered since her Sophomore year, serving as coordinator last Fall. Most recently, in September 2011, she helped plan the "El Grito de Lares: Birth of the Puerto Rican Nation" event, commemorating Puerto Rico's independence movement against the Spanish in 1868 and raising awareness of her native Puerto Rico's past and current situation. She is now completing the fourth credit option with the WESPAC Foundation for social justice in White Plains, and volunteering for Children's Hope and Ladies Room. She describes her experiences with the Duchesne Center as one of the highlights of her college career. Each of her experiences has allowed her to help others and also to learn and grow in a very special way.
