George Castellanos, Ph.D.

Associate Professor

Dr. George Castellanos is an Associate Professor in the Spanish Department and the Latin American Studies Program at Manhattanville College.  He has taught previously at the College of New Rochelle and Mercy College. 

He received a BA in Spanish from Iona College, an MA in Spanish from Middlebury College, an MS in School Administration and Supervision from Iona College and an MA in Philosophy and a Ph.D. from The Graduate School and University Center, CUNY.  He was also a recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship for research in Mexico in 1973.

Dr. Castellanos has lectured in a series of State, National and International conferences on topics dealing with education, Latin American literature and culture. He is the author of the book Modernismo y modernidad en la narrativa de José María Rivas Groot.  

Dr. Castellanos has been honored by the Academia Colombiana de la Lengua Correspondent of the Royal Academy of Spain, with the Premio de Filología Félix Restrepo for his literary essay on the nineteenth century Colombian writer, José María Rivas Groot.  He also received the Huntington Award for Best Doctoral Dissertation given by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese New York Chapter.  Dr. Castellanos appears in the1988-1989 edition of Who's Who in American Education, the 1991-1992 edition of Who's Who in the East and the 2003 edition of Who's Who in America.  He also appears in the 2011 -2012 Edition of Montclair Who's Who in Collegiate Faculty in North America. 

In 2007, Dr. Castellanos was honored with the El Award, a recognition given annually by El Diario La Prensa to the most influential Hispanic men in the Tri-state area.

Dr. Castellanos is the founding president of the Hispanic Educators Association of Westchester and has been a consultant for the New York State Education Department, the Random House Institute for the Development of Human Resources, the Tinker Foundation, the Middle States Association of Colleges and School and the Westchester County Library System.  In 1982, he was the Coordinator and Associate Producer with the New York State Education Department of the film, Reaching-out: Foreign Language Education, a New Perspective in America.  He has held office and been a member of numerous professional and civic organizations such as Congresswoman Nita Lowey's Hispanic Advisory Board, Chairperson of the Westchester County Human Rights Commission, Chairman of the Westchester County Hispanic Advisory Board, Vice-Chairperson of the Westchester County Youth Board.
