A Collaborative Initiative to Improve Educational Opportunities for Diverse Students in Changing Suburbs

The School of Education's Changing Suburbs Institute ® (CSI) is entering its tenth year of helping school districts adjust to shifting demographics in student populations in order to improve educational opportunities.

What is a “Changing Suburb”?

Manhattanville College defines a "Changing Suburb" as one where the diversity of the population has increased, particularly among Hispanics.

What are our goals?

CSI focuses on four major areas: teacher development and school leadership development, collaboration, parent education, and dissemination of information.

CSI Programs

Annual Educational Forum
CSI hosts an annual conference in the spring where leaders in education share the latest research with teachers, school administrators and others, and where workshops are presented by local experts.

Hispanic Parents Leadership Institute
CSI provides information for Hispanic parents on how to be strong advocates for their children’s education.  Conferences provide information on the US educational system and guidance on collaborating with schools.

Consortium and Clearinghouse
The CSI consortium includes administrators, teachers and community leaders interested in collaborating on serving the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse students. The consortium meets quarterly during the school year and welcomes new members dedicated to serving the needs of diverse students.  CSI also maintains an online clearinghouse, which provides access to research, presentations and other information pertaining to educational topics in the changing suburbs.

Professional Development Schools (PDS)
A PDS is a school that partners with a college to prepare teacher candidates, provide faculty development, improve instructional practices, and enhance student learning.  CSI currently has 12 schools with whom it partners.
