Katie Discover ThumbnailKatie Cariello is active in many student clubs and organizations at Manhattanville.  Currently she is a Resident Advisor, a DJ for the college radio station WMVL, and a member of Manhattanville Sound, an a cappella singing group.  In 2010 she will be graduating with a major in Political Science.  “As a senior in high school I had decided that I wanted to go to a small college,” she said.  “I had heard about Manhattanville from some neighbors at home, so I came for a visit and fell in love with the campus and the feeling of community here.”

Katie started at Manhattanville unsure of her major, taking a variety of classes.  She finally decided on Political Science after speaking with her faculty advisor.  “I have discovered that it is a great subject to become immersed in,” she said. “There is so much history to it and it is a field that can take you in many different directions.”

During the 07-08 school year she was a Student Affairs representative, and for the 08-09 school year she was elected Vice President.  “My position in student government is to speak to different departments on campus, such as Resident Life, Career Services, the health center, etc., and talk with them about students' concerns and also concerns that those departments might have,” she said.  “I think that SGA is a great organization.  The students who are involved really care about the community and want the best not only for themselves, but for everyone who attends Manhattanville.  I encourage all students to come to the open meetings and let their voice be heard.”

For the 08-09 school year, Katie will also be the Vice President of Achieving Conservation Together (ACT).  The club focuses on “greening” the College and raising awareness of environmental issues.  For example, ACT was responsible for getting recycling bins inside student dorms, and buying over a hundred infant trees to be planted at the back of the campus.

Katie’s commitment to service issues has also led to her volunteering with the College’s Duchesne Center for Social Justice.  Last summer she traveled to New Orleans with a group of other Duchesne volunteers to work with St. Bernard's Project, an organization dedicated to helping rebuild homes lost in Hurricane Katrina.  “It was hard work, but I really enjoyed the trip,” Katie said. “We did things like paint walls and put in floors.  I hope that this year I will be able to participate in more community service projects, and perhaps go on another service learning trip with the Duchesne Center.”
